Prairie Fire and Snow

Controlled Burn at KingsvilleOld Barn, Kingsville on February 26, 2013

Two contrasting photos from Kingsville taken this February and now on my site - The second was taken during a heavy snowstorm, the second in a week, from which we are still recovering.

Earlier in the month, with the help of friends more experienced than me in the science of burning pasture, we touched one field at night, which made the burning appear much more intense than it really was. The goal is to remove the surface grasses so that a spring seeding of native flowers will take root and provide not only more color but food for butterflies and other insects, and seeds for birds in the winter.

If we are successful I should have lots of photos to share with you later in the year.
